VICUNA - WORLD'S MOST LUXURIOUS WOOL

It was recognized as a treasure of the heights since the age of the Republic and was used long before by the great Inca lords and high rulers of the ancient Peruvian people as a sign of great distinction. 

However, as a result of hunting and indiscriminate commercialization of its fur, the "wik'uña" - Quechua root for vicuna - went from being the dominant camelid species of the Andes to one of the most predated animals ever, the beautiful Vicunas were once on the verge of disappearing. Fortunately, since the 1960s, when the species was on the way to extinction, the Peruvian government, together with UNESCO, initiated a series of strategies and agreements that allowed the creation of programs aimed at the protection and conservation of the species; At the same time, these programs allowed the sustainable commercialization of Vicuna fiber, through the education of the Andean shepherd on the care and importance of Vicunas for the environment as well as their livelihood.

The Vicuna represents the beauty and majesty of the Peruvian Andes, but why is it so valuable?

First, Vicunas do not produce wool very quickly, and it can take years for the sheared wool to grow back. This makes gathering large quantities of wool more difficult. In addition, they were nearly extinct, therefore, Peru has created restrictions on the export of the precious wool. Being a Luxurious Fiber, Vicuna wool is the object of desire for its style and elegance. A trend that allows keeping ancestral textile heritages without damaging the preservation of this exotic species.

And, how to make sustainable use of the Vicuna then?

Finding a way to remove their fiber without endangering them: A pre-Hispanic Vicuna capture technique called "Chaku" has been recovered and adapted to modern science to ensure animal welfare. It is an example that the high value of its fiber can be used in favor of conservation. And although price and the market play a role in this success story, recognizing the local population, the indigenous population, as deserving of the benefits is the key point that determined the success of the vicuña conservation, making each garment socially conscious clothing.
